The Gross to Net Formula
Gross Pay Salary ÷ Pay Periods | Hourly Rate × Hours
– Pretax Deductions 401(k) + HSA + Health + Other
= Taxable Income Gross − Pretax Deductions
– Federal Income Tax 2026 Brackets + Standard Deduction
– Social Security 6.2% up to $184,500 annual wages
– Medicare 1.45% all wages + 0.9% over $200,000
– State Income Tax Approximate effective rate for selected state
– Post-Tax Deductions Roth 401(k) + Other
= Net Pay (Take-Home) What you receive per paycheck

The standard deduction is applied annually to calculate federal taxable income before converting back to a per-paycheck amount. State income tax uses approximate effective blended rates. Local taxes, garnishments, and employer-specific plan rules are not modeled.

2026 Federal Standard Deductions

Single: $13,850  |  Married Filing Jointly: $27,700  |  Head of Household: $20,800. These are subtracted from your annual taxable wages before applying the federal tax brackets.

2026 Social Security Wage Base

The Social Security taxable wage base is $184,500 for 2026. Wages above this are not subject to the 6.2% employee SS tax. Medicare tax (1.45%) applies to all wages with no cap. See the FICA tax calculator for a detailed FICA breakdown.

Pretax vs Post-Tax Deductions

Pretax deductions like traditional 401(k) contributions reduce your taxable income. Post-tax deductions like Roth 401(k) do not reduce taxable income but grow tax-free in retirement. Use our pretax deduction calculator to model specific scenarios.

States With No Wage Income Tax

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not tax ordinary wages at the state level. Workers in these states keep more of their gross pay compared to high-tax states like California or Oregon.

Additional Medicare Tax

The additional 0.9% Medicare tax applies to wages above $200,000 for single filers and $250,000 for married filing jointly. Employers withhold this automatically once your wages pass the $200,000 threshold in a calendar year, regardless of filing status.
